The opening lines of Virginia Woolf's Mrs Dalloway. The old servants' bells in our kitchen evoke that period and hint at how different the relationships in a household then would have been: a household that would have looked out of that very window, that might have placed flowers from the garden on that very windowsill. Maybe nothing has really changed; in a way, all those hopes and dreams are the same, it’s just the bells that are redundant.
