Describe your early memories of your emerging talent as an artist?:

As a child, I was always drawing and painting, normally boats, the water, and sometimes old buildings. A change of teacher mid way through GCSE Art and Design led to me believing that I had some artistic talent, but it wasn't until I had toyed with other creative avenues (theatre, music) that I came to the realisation that I was by far my happiest when behind an easel.

Formal Training:

BTEC Diploma in Foundation Art and Design

GCSE Art and Design

Informal Training:

Watercolour, Oils and Life-drawing evening classes over the years 2004-present.

Other influences:

The pre-raphelite brotherhood, the impressionists, colour, nature.

Role of figurative art:

The role of figurative art in my life has been two pronged - on the one side, it is something I get great enjoyment in creating, and on the other, I am truly in my element when surrounded by good figurative art - lod or new, by unknown or famous artist. I also strongly believe that the time is right for figurative art to regain it's place in the art world - too long has it been put aside for conceptual art to laugh at; and although there are many pieces of abstract and conceptual art that are fantastic and thought provoking, it has also become an excuse for artists not to use the skills and talents they were born with.

Perfect Day

Danielle Hicks-Gallagher

My most recent painting, created specifically as a raffle prize.
I chose to put the jib (the most lefthand sail) as going off the canvas and round on to the edge - as a method of showing the movement, but I feel that in a photograph this doesn't show as well as when viewed in real life.
I'm always trying to capture that lazy, hazy feel of perfect days spent on the water as a child, and to show the colours as I experience them.

Guest Article: How do you like your art?

I have worked in the art world for almost ten years and every now and then I am still surprised by the different viewpoints that exist on the topic. For example, when I work I have a very functional view - I tend to think of an artwork as a thing made out of canvas, paint, steel, bronze, plastic or a combination of materials. This thing (or pair of things) needs to be framed, installed, condition checked, repaired, crated, flown, customs cleared, preferably not damaged and especially not lost.
