In Greek/Roman mythology Aphrodite/Venus was the Goddess of Love, to whom this temple is dedicated.
Scientific research has shown that the neurotransmitter Serotonin is involved in mood regulation and a feeling of well-being associated with 'being in love'. Serotonin deficiency can lead to depression, treated with drugs that increase serotonin levels.
Bee-stings also contain serotonin; love is not always painless, as was noted by Lucas Cranach the Elder in his painting 'Cupid complaining to Venus' in the National Gallery, London.
This work is the beginning of an exploration of the links between Greek mythology and modern neuroscience. In Greek/Roman mythology Bachus/Dionysus was the God of wine and dance, while the chemical Dopamine is the neurotransmitter associated with pleasure and reward.
I have worked in the art world for almost ten years and every now and then I am still surprised by the different viewpoints that exist on the topic. For example, when I work I have a very functional view - I tend to think of an artwork as a thing made out of canvas, paint, steel, bronze, plastic or a combination of materials. This thing (or pair of things) needs to be framed, installed, condition checked, repaired, crated, flown, customs cleared, preferably not damaged and especially not lost.
