Biography

Preferred Medium:
Digital photography
Preferred Style:
Documentary, observational photography
Describe your early memories of your emerging talent as an artist?:
I have always been interested in the way things look but my background is not in arts. I studied law and then moved into television and was immediately drawn towards the visual aspects of television. I moved fairly swiftly into directing, which involved visual storytelling, defining the way things look. As a photographer, the visual enticement, the desire to capture reality beautifully, is still paramount.
Formal Training:
LLB Law Degree. 2:1
MA Photojournalism Westminster University. Distinction
Portrait classes – St Martins School of Art and Design.
Informal Training:
I spent 20 years in television, initially as a researcher, journalist and presenter for Granada Television and Assistant Producer for BBC. I then spent a decade as a freelance documentary filmmaker for Channel 4 and the BBC, travelling the globe, making films as diverse as ‘Into Africa’, ‘Rough Guide To the World,’ ‘Great Railway Journeys’ and ‘Panorama’, before joining the BBC as an Executive Producer in Factual Commissioning. This documentary film-making training, together with my formal photojournalism training, has taught me to tell stories through images, to observe, capture the moments and reveal the essence of subjects.
Other influences:
I am influenced by many great photographers, including Henri Cartier Bresson, Martine Franck, Alex Webb, Abbas, Sally Field, Dorthea Lange, Bruce Davidson, Ian Berry, James Nachtway and many more. I am also simply influenced by people, experience and situations.
Admired Artists:
Matisse, Picasso, Cezanne, Degas, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Bruce Davidson, Margaret Bourke- White, Bill Brandt, Lewis Hine.
Role of figurative art:
For me, what’s important is capturing, representing, celebrating, unearthing/accessing and exploring the extraordinary and the ordinary: real life.
Favorite Gallery:
National Portrait Gallery
Other Interests:
My career and my family fulfill my days and nights –though I would love to travel again once more and explore cultures, people and places.
