This is my favorite piece, not the least being it is our middle daughter in eigteenth century Bavarian farm girl costume. My wife heike is from hamburg and over the years we have traveled through Germany and spent lots of time in Bavaria (Oberammergau is a magnet for me) and my style has been and is influenced by the art I have seen there.

Ever wonder whether there is a place in today's world for mythology, well so does Luna, Godess of the Moon. She is being carried on a cloud blown along by a zephr visible in the rear view.This work in progress clay "master", when completed, will become a series of twenty eight bronzes. It is being offered at a "precast" price of $2700 USD and it is expected to be available as a finished bronze in the first quarter of 2010.

I created this piece as art is often considered enigmatic and patrons and art lovers often ask “What does it mean?” or “What was the artist’s inspiration or what was he/she thinking?” Additionally, I wanted something that shows the many techniques of sculpting i.e. in the round, high and low relief, etc. If you are aware of Renaissance symbology, you will have some fun trying to understand the answers to the two questions above; and, like fine wine, the answer is whatever you find in it.

The original of this bronze was a carving that can also be found on this site. So many fellow carvers or sculpors suggested it should be a bronze, I decided to do that. The first mold was taken from the wood carving and I than reworked the resulting wax and we made a second mold from that reworked wax. Having the opportunity to "revisit" the piece, I made several subtle changes to the figure and redid the lilies in wax as I could refine and make more realistic the lilies by doing this as I could not carve them that thin in wood.

This was an "accidental" occurance. Another carver I know gave me this block and I conceived it, for whatever reason, as Blessed Kateri. Kateri, who contracted smallpox as a child, did so from "white man's" infected blankets given as "gifts". I conceived her as standing on a slate outcropping, which are common in the area in NY State where she was born, having a vision of God and on the side facing God, all the scarring has disappeared. As the wood was cedar, I had hoped the white in it would have split the face as it did to a degree on the right arm.
